Curriculum

Knowledge Rich Curriculum

In our Trust, the curriculum is broadly defined as the knowledge students are expected to learn (including spiritual, moral, social and cultural) through the totality of experiences provided in our children’s primary schooling.

We define knowledge in two categories:

Declarative knowledge: (to know that…) This is all about learning specific facts.

Procedural knowledge (to know how….) This is linked to developing skills.

3D Curriculum

Our curriculum is designed to enable children to consolidate and build upon know knowledge.

Where possible we have developed horizontal links within a year group, linking knowledge between different subject areas. For example the science knowledge may link closely to the geography knowledge for that term.

In addition we have developed vertical links within a subject to enable children to use and apply prior knowledge from the previous year. For example the maths knowledge learnt in Year 3 will be applied to build upon new knowledge in Year 4.

Learning

‘Learning is defined as an alteration in long-term memory. If nothing has been altered in long-term memory then nothing has been learned.’

In line with cognitive load theory we aim, through our teaching, to develop understanding by building well-developed schema: well organised, connected knowledge as opposed to a handful of unconnected facts. The opportunity to consolidate and reuse knowledge to develop new knowledge is part of our approach.

Year Group Curriculum Overviews

Our ‘Year Group Overviews’ provide a high level view of the National Curriculum coverage for each year group.

More detailed 'Termly Overviews' can be found on the class pages. These provide greater detail on the content within each unit of work and the key vocabulary exposed to the children.

We have four phases in our school and each phase works from a two year curriculum cycle. As mentioned on the curriculum statement page, our curriculum is designed to enable children to consolidate and build upon knowledge. Where possible tangible links are created between subjects and year groups to develop a 3D curriculum; and allow children to use, apply and transfer previously learnt knowledge.

 Subject Curriculum Oveviews

Our subject curriculum overviews provide a high level view of the coverage of each subject across the school.

Science topics are linked to History and Geography where possible.

History and Geography often become the termly topic focus for each class. Trips and experiences are used to extend learning were possible

Teachers use ‘Understanding Christianity’ and the ‘Diocesan Agreed Syllabus’ to support the teaching of RE. There are three main aspects to the planning and delivery of RE; ‘Make sense of the text’, ‘Understanding the Impact’ and ‘Making Connections’. Children are encouraged to consider how RE knowledge links to their lives and the wider world.

PE planning is based on Val Sabin units of work. During the year we provide children with experiences of working with external sports coaches to enhance the quality of our PE provision. In addition to the PE curriculum, children in all year groups have the opportunity to take part in internal ‘inter-house sports competitions and represent the school at various sporting events against other local schools.

Music is a significant part of daily life at Silverstone Primary and we inspire to develop a love of music. Music is prominent in all collective worship and enjoyed by all children. Furthermore music is used within lessons throughout the day to create an effective learning environment. We follow the Charanga music scheme of work and supplement this with units on classical music.

PSHE is based on the ‘SCARF’ scheme of work from Corum Education. Once a year the ‘Education Bus’ visits our school for a few days and the PSHE curriculum is enhanced through children covering sensitive topics with external professionals.

As with all subjects, Art and Design Technology follow the Nation Curriculum and where possible links are made with other subject areas such as history, geography and science. This helps to bring a purpose to the learning.
